Edgar Perry "Corky" Smith, Jr., 88, widower of Dorothy Louise (Humphreys) Smith, of Staunton, passed away on Tuesday, October 4, 2022 at Augusta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Fishersville.

Mr. Smith was born near Middlebrook, Virginia on December 19, 1933, the son of the late Edgar Perry Smith, Sr. and Mary (Gilmer) Smith Gabbert.

Corky served in the United States Army as Military Policeman for 2 years. He then worked 34 years in law enforcement; 5 years at the Staunton Police Department; and 29 years at the Staunton Sheriff's Office, including 14 years as Sheriff. Corky was a member of St. Pauls United Methodist Church and a life member and former president of Augusta Lions Club.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Sue (Smith) Harris and a special friend, Carolyn Lantz.

Surviving, is a son, Edgar "Eddie" Smith, III of Staunton; a sister, Ruby Fitzgerald of Kinston, NC; four grandchildren, Jeremy Shifflett, Melissa Pettry, Tiffany Patterson and her husband "Bo", and Kyler Grove; and numerous great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 29, 2022 in the Coffman Funeral Home Chapel by Reverend William "Bill" Trice.

The family will receive friends following the service.
