Donald Lee “Duck” Cary, born July 8, 1961, passed away on April 6, 2026, surrounded by his family. Duck was the beloved son of the late Donald and Mary “Lou” (Leach) Cary, and preceded in death by his brother, Mike Cary and wife Julie (Bartley) Cary.
Duck is survived by his two sons, Christopher Cary (Jennifer) and Andrew Cary (Sara), who were the pride of his life. He also leaves behind his “Sis” and best friend, Mary Virginia, and her husband, Gary Roudabush, who was not only family but one of Duck’s closest friends; his two granddaughters, Taylor Forbus (Jude) and Callie Gibson; nephew, Jeremy Roudabush (Chelsie); nieces, Alisha Cary, EmmaRae Cross, Jenny Jordan (Jason), and Krissy Roudabush.
Duck had a deep love for the land and spent his life farming with his family, a passion that reflected his hardworking, doer and fixer-of-all things, character. He loved playing softball and drove a pulling tractor as member of the 540 Outlaws, where he honored his late brother by “Pulling for Mike,” a tribute that meant so much to him.
For many years, Duck served faithfully on the Staunton-Augusta Rescue Squad, where he taught farm machinery extrication and built lasting friendships while giving back to his community with dedication and compassion.
Throughout his battle with cancer, Duck remained true to himself - strong, resilient, and full of charm. He never liked to admit when he felt unwell, often joking with his doctors, “I can’t help I look this good,” a testament to his enduring spirit and ability to find light even in his hardest moments.
Duck never met a stranger, building countless friendships that meant the world to him. No conversation was ever complete without him asking, “Is there anything I can do for you?” A testament to his love and devotion to his family and many loyal friends while leaving a legacy of strength and kindness.
A memorial service will be held following cremation, in the Coffman Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, April 10, 2026 at 3:00 p.m.
The family will receive friends following the service.
