Obituary

Dr. Donald R. Fowler, 87, born June 18, 1936 in Parkersburg, West Virginia united with his beloved wife of 66 years, on Monday, February 26, 2024, 6 days after losing her.

A graduate from Parkersburg High School and Washington and Lee University, he married his high school sweetheart, the late Sharlene Fowler on August 24, 1957.  He graduated from medical school at West Virginia University and joined the US Navy Medical Corps in 1962 as a flight surgeon.  He retired from the Navy as a Captain in 1978 and entered the Navy Reserves to begin private practice at Kings Daughters Hospital in Staunton, Virginia.  After retiring as a General and Vascular surgeon, he was Chief Medical Officer of Augusta Medical Center, Senior Vice President Medical Affairs at Augusta Medical Center and Medical Director of Lifetime Fitness Center at Augusta Health.

He was God fearing, humble man who cherished his family, remained active, adventurous and lived life to the fullest. Just a few of his accomplishments and memberships include:  completing the Boston Marathon, Black Belt Dragon Society member/instructor, worldwide scuba diver and kayaker, and traveled the states on his Harley Davidson Trike.  Locally, he was a member of the Rotary Club, Model A club, Trinity Episcopal Church, medical advisor & instructor to Staunton Augusta Rescue Squad, team physician for Robert E. Lee High School, he authored his own memoir, "The First 75 Years", and he donated his body for educational surgical purposes.

Surviving, is a son, Todd Fowler of Staunton; Blair and Bret's mom, Sarah Fowler of Staunton; two daughters, Lynne Fowler of Florida, and Kimberly Hutchison of California; three granddaughters, Blair Halterman and her husband Abe Halterman of Grottoes, Bret Fowler and her fiancé Trent Shreckhise of Weyers Cave, Erika Breeden of Florida; two grandsons, Ryan Linden and Evan Hutchison of California; great-grandchildren, Gus Halterman and John Fowler Halterman of Grottoes, and Jett Evans of North Carolina.

Honoring the wishes of our parents, there will be no public service and burial will be private.

The family wishes to express a sincere "Thank You" to Mary, Joy, Marsha, Emma, Phyllis, Tiffanie and Paul.
