DANA W. HELMICK
GREENVILLE:
Dana Wyatt Helmick, 73, of 234 Poor Creek Lane, Greenville passed away at home Sunday, July 10, 2011.
He was born December 26, 1937 in Elkins, West Virginia, a son of the late Gay W. Helmick and Maple (Rexrode) Helmick Richardson.
Dana was a 1962 graduate of West Virginia Institute of Technology. In 1965, he became the Executive Director of the Columbus, Ohio YMCA. He directed the World Weightlifting Championship event in 1971 and later returned to Elkins, WVA as the Director of the YMCA. He moved to Staunton in the 1970s and spent his later years devoting his love of history and people to the Frontier Culture Museum.
He is survived by his loving wife, Catherine McCormick; daughters, Tami Berry and husband Keith of Norfolk, VA and Terri Hunter and husband Chip of Stuarts Draft; sons, Richard Helmick of North Myrtle Beach, SC and Andrew Helmick of the home; granddaughters, Megan, Mallory and Alexis Berry of Norfolk, VA and Kristin Hunter of Stuarts Draft. Also surviving is a sister, Hilda Helmick Pennington of Elkins, WVA; brothers, Robert Helmick of Louisville, KY and Bernie Helmick of Columbus, OH; numerous nieces, nephews and many extended family members and friends.
A Memorial service honoring Danas life will be conducted 4:00 p.m. Thursday, July 14, 2011 in the Frontier Culture Museum Octagon Barn by Pastor Bobby Campbell.
The family will receive friends following the service.
A private burial will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the American Frontier Culture Foundation, PO Box 629, Staunton, VA 24402.
