Colonel Arthur J. Liedel, 77, of Churchville, Virginia passed away October 8, 2010. Art was born in Monroe, Michigan on April 12, 1933, a son of the late Leonard Sebastian \u0026 Amilda Specht Liedel. He graduated from Monroe Catholic Central High in 1951 and from the University of Toledo in 1955. He married his high school sweetheart, Pauline Rorke on June 13, 1953. They recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. Art served in the US Marine Corps for 35 yrs. Art was an active volunteer for over 40 yrs in the ELKS, American Legion, Knights of Columbus and served in various churches and schools throughout his life. Art was an Exalted Ruler and District Deputy with the Elks and a Deputy Commander with the American Legion. Art was a member of Saint Johns The Evangelist Catholic Church of Waynesboro VA. His life was full of honor, giving, pride and love for family and community. He was loved by many and he especially loved and enjoyed his grandchildren. He touched so many lives and will be missed by all. In addition to his parents, Art was preceded in death by sisters Jayne Gerhardt, Bettye Schmidt, Shirley Durocher and Ruth Dean. He is survived by his wife Pauline; sons Michael (Victoria), Ryan and Kara of Stafford VA and Tori of Atlantic City NJ; Craig (Myrna), Nick, Tim, and Angelica of Woodbridge VA; Brad (Lisa), of Bristow VA; daughters Pam (Jeff), Alexis and Grant Gordon of Virginia Beach VA; and Michelle (William), and Max Campbell of Tucson AZ; brothers Donald of Northville MI, Kenneth of Surprise AZ, Leonard of Ocala FL, and Lawrence of Naples FL; sisters Barbara Marino and Marjorie Kehres of Monroe, and Phylis Bobich of Maybee. The family will receive friends from 2-3:30PM on Oct 12 at St. Johns Evangelist Catholic Church. A Mass will be held 4PM on Oct 12 at St. Johns. Interment will follow the next day at 9AM at Quantico National Cemetery in VA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Arts memory to the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation (www.marineheritage.org). The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the church family of Saint Johns and many other family and friends who were so faithful with calls, visits, cards and prayers.
