Christine Ilene (Carpenter) Davis, 87, widow of Douglas Arthur Davis, Sr., of the Plaza Apartments, died Thursday, (October 2, 2008) in the Kings Daughters Community Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Mrs. Davis was born on March 4, 1921 in Bath County, a daughter of the late Willie Otis and Eva Margaret (Cauley) Carpenter.
She was retired from the U.S. Forestry Service and attended the Staunton First Church of the Nazarene. Christine enjoyed the outdoors, camping, fishing, raising birds and spending time with her family and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by a son, Arthur Macon Davis, two brothers; Calvin and Milan Carpenter and two sisters; Maxine Crizer and Jerline Fix.
Surviving is a daughter and son-in-law; Allene C. Thorne and husband Paul of Staunton; four sons and three daughters-in-law; Otis G. Carpenter, Sr. and wife Mary of Staunton, Douglas A. Davis, Jr. and wife Katheline of Verona, Wayne E. Davis, Sr. and wife Janice of Waynesboro and Herbert W. Davis, Sr. of Stuarts Draft; twenty-three grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren also survive. Mrs. Davis is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews and two very special care-givers, Dori Martin and Tammy Simmons.
Mrs. Davis was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Active pallbearers will be her grandsons, Adam, Wayne, Herbie and Douglas A. Davis, III, Otis Carpenter, Jr., Doug H. Carpenter, Sr., Earl McCray, Jr. and Danny McCray.
A graveside service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Monday, (October 6, 2008) in the Thornrose Cemetery by Pastor Nathan Myers.
The family will receive friends this evening from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory and other times the homes of her children.
