Charlotte Geraldine Jerry (Warren) Long, 79, wife of Pastor Donald Lee Long of 400 Peach Street, passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at her residence.
Mrs. Long was born on August 28, 1935 in Chesterfield, a daughter of the late Ernest Freeman and Jessie Jeanette (Taylor) Warren.
Jerry was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, the Juliana Gordon Hayes Mission Circle and was known by all as the Nursery Nanny. She was a 1954 graduate of Thomas Dale High School, and in 1972, she received the Certificate of Service award from the Childrens Home Society for her foster care of more than 20 children. Mrs. Long was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women, she assisted with the churchs meals program, she enjoyed bird watching, flower gardening, puzzles, reading, spending time at the beach and the York River.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Long was preceded in death by a son, Jack W. Long and a sister, Patricia Ellis.
Surviving in addition to her husband of fifty-eight years, are seven sons, Tony L. Long and wife Sandy of Elkton, Russell W. Long and wife Stacy of Waynesboro, Andrew B. Long and wife Melody of Staunton, Donald L. Long, Jr. of Front Royal, Richard L. Long and wife Tiffany of WV, Matthew W. Long and wife LaTayna of Waynesboro and R. Michael Long and wife Mary of Staunton; nine daughters, Pamela L. Bennett of Verona, Sandra M. Kempton and husband Chris of Stuarts Draft, Mickie Toman of Stuarts Draft, Katherine Renee Rhea of Gloucester, Gwynne S. Bradbury and Sarah M. Long both of Newport News, N. Kim Murphy and husband Tommy of KY, Amy Elizabeth Long of Staunton and Maria G. Long of Roanoke; two brothers, Forest Taylor Warren of FL and Robert Jackson Warren of Richmond; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive.
A Memorial service will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, May 2, 2015 in Christ United Methodist Church by Rev. Sarah D. Locke and Rev. Dave Rochford.
The family will receive friends following the service.
Burial will be private in McKinley United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Juliana Gordon Hayes Mission Circle and the Thursday Meals program, including the delivery persons.
