STAUNTON:

Charles Sylvester Charlie Rankin, 70, husband of Elda (Bottenfield) Rankin of 592 Middlebrook Road, Staunton passed away Sunday afternoon, (May 17, 2009) in the Shenandoah Hospice House in Fishersville.
Mr. Rankin was born April 16, 1939 in Augusta County, a son of the late Raymond Preston and Jessie Rebecca (Nutty) Rankin.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Rankin was preceded in death by a brother, William Lynwood Rankin.
Charlie was the owner and operator of Rankins Auto Repair Shop, serving the Staunton area for over forty years. He was a member of the St. Johns Reformed Church where he served as a Deacon, Elder and served on other numerous church committees.
In addition to his beloved wife and best friend to whom he married on March 28, 1959 survivors include a daughter, Tamara L. Simmons of Staunton; a brother and sister-in-law, Raymond Edward Rankin and his wife Shirley of Mint Springs; a sister, Betty (Rankin) Hutchens of Staunton; two grandchildren; Ryan M. Simmons and his friend Katelynn Smith and Hailey B. Rankin Simmons; a great-grandson Cooper Aiden Simmons; seven nephews and two nieces also survive.
A celebration of Charlies life will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, 2009 in St. Johns Reformed Church by Rev. Glenn W. Barrett and Pastor Tom Arner. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, 2009 in the funeral home and other times at his residence.
Active pallbearers will be Vaiden Clatterbaugh, William Baylor, Ronald Bales, David Lowman, Delmar Lambert, Leonard Shover, Tom Hutchens, Larry Hutchens and Ray Rankin, Jr.
Honorary pallbearers will be his best friends R.S. Saylor, Jerry Conner, Bob Wimer, Robert Bottenfield and members of St. Johns Church.
It is suggested that those desiring to make memorial contributions to the St. Johns Reformed Church, Pastors Discretionary Fund, c/o Thomas Galloway, 1484 Laurel Hill Road, Verona, Va. 24482.
