For nearly three decades, he maintained an independent medical practice serving the people of Staunton and the region.
The third generation by that name to serve as a physician, Dr. Harrison always put the health and well-being of his patients first and thought of himself as ever the student of his profession.
Born in Nashville, Tennessee, on May 25, 1942, he grew up in Winchester, Virginia, the eldest son of Dr. Carrington Harrison, II, and Margaret Philips Harrison. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Duncan and Tucker Harrison.
Dr. Harrison is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Louise Harrison; his brother, Hartwell Harrison; his son, Gessner Harrison; three daughters: Maggie Barrett, Hallie Harrison, and Mary Stuart Harrison; and his four grandchildren: Dylan and Noah Nessar, Carter Barrett, and Charlotte Harrison.
A graduate of Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, Virginia, Dr. Harrison earned his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine degrees from the University of Virginia. He completed a medical internship at Naval Hospital Philadelphia. Afterward, he served active duty with the U.S. Navy during which he was deployed to Spain, Greece, South America, and the Virgin Islands.
He completed his residency in orthopedics at Erlanger Baroness Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee, affiliated with the University of Tennessee College of Medicine–Chattanooga.
Dr. Harrison served on the board of the Valley Mission and regularly volunteered with Special Olympics of Virginia.
He profoundly enjoyed his family, playing tennis and the drums, hiking, canoeing, gardening, and baking. He delighted in riding the train and he was spiritually enriched by his Catholic faith.
