Obituary

Betty Jean (Halterman) Bayne, 80, widow of Norman Leroy Bayne, of Staunton, passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 at Brookdale Senior Living in Staunton.

Mrs. Bayne was born in Rockingham County on March 14, 1946, a daughter of the late Forrest Henry Halterman, Sr. and Marie Catherine (Huffman) Halterman.

As a young woman, Betty worked as a seamstress at Genesco for several years. Later, she owned and operated High’s Restaurant in Monterey for 20 years along with her husband. Prior to full retirement, Betty was employed as a head cashier for Walmart and K-Mart in Lexington. She was an excellent seamstress and cook, and enjoyed using her skills to the benefit of those around her.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Bayne was preceded by her son, William Edward “Billy” Wharton; and two brothers, Buster Halterman and Forrest H. Halterman, Jr.

Surviving, are two daughters, Kathy Rexrode and her husband, David of Sugar Grove, WV and Barbara Wharton (Robert Hughes) of Staunton; a step-son, Samuel R. Wood and his wife, Vickie of Millboro; a step-daughter, Sandra Eggleston of Powhatan; four brothers, Donald Halterman and his wife, Missy, Jimmy Halterman, and Johnny R. Halterman all of Staunton, and Jerry Halterman of PA; two sisters, Maryanne Spitzer and her husband, Junior of Staunton and Shirley Halterman of Vesuvius; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A private graveside service will be held in Bethlehem Church Cemetery.

Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive, Staunton, is in charge of her arrangements.
