Bernard A. I. White, 83, husband of Luleen White, of 525 Robin Street, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family, following a long and courageous struggle with cancer.
Mr. White was born August 14, 1930 in Crystle Valley, Michigan a son of the late Floyd H. White and Lilly (Bell) White.
Mr. White was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest J. White of Maryville, TN; Stillman F. White and a sister Margorie L. Karnes of Michigan.
Mr. White was a member of Memorial Baptist Church where he had served as Deacon, Sunday School Director, Trustee, Chairman of the Premises Committee and Sunday School teacher. He served in the U. S. Army/Air Force during the Korean War as an air traffic controller. He received the Korean Service medal, United Nations Service medal, National Defense Service medal and Good Conduct medal. Bernard was employed for 34 years with the Verizon Telephone Company. In 1971 he transferred from the Engineering Department in Danville to Staunton as supervisor over the Test and Assignment Center on Fillmore Street. At retirement in 1989 he was supervisor of Cable Maintenance. Mr. White was a member and past president of the Staunton Kiwanis Club, Champaign Chairman with the United Way in 1992, worked with Literacy Volunteers, served on the Salvation Army Board of Directors, and past board member of the Staunton Fine Arts Center. He was also a life member and past president of the Staunton Verizon Telephone Pioneer Club and a volunteer with the Verona Food Pantry. Bernard was a loving, caring husband and father who enjoyed playing golf, traveling, playing his guitar, volunteering and helping others.
In addition to his loving wife of 53 years, surviving is his precious daughter, Denise Humphries of Staunton; a sister, Gloria Karnes of Bedford, VA and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
A Memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 29, 2013 in Memorial Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Temple D. Myers and Rev. Ben Sprouse.
Burial will be private in Oaklawn Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 8:00 p.m., Monday, October 29, 2013 in Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, and other times at the residence.
Active pallbearers will be R.M. Stone, Mike Lacy, Jack Blake, Jim Harner, Todd Wilmore, Danny Karnes and Scott Brann.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Fellowship Sunday School class, and members of the Staunton Kiwanis.
