Anita Evelyn Haessly, age 90, of Staunton, Virginia, passed peacefully from this life on July 21, 2026, at her home, surrounded by her three loving daughters.

Born on February 20, 1936, in the Bronx, New York, Anita was the beloved daughter of Frieda Biehler, affectionately known as "Mutti." Throughout her ninety years, Anita lived a life defined by devotion to her family, dedication to her community, and a steadfast faith that guided her every step.

Anita was preceded in death by her mother, Frieda Biehler; her beloved husband, William "Bill" Haessly; her sister, Inga Christy and brother-in-law Jack Christy; her brother, Ernie Hoffmann; her bonus daughter, Mary Kay Haessly who welcomed her into eternal rest.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Linda Armstrong, Kathy Wade, and Mary Driver (David); her bonus daughters, Caroline Haessly and Janie Whitman; and her sister-in-law, Nerissa Hoffmann.

She was a proud and devoted grandmother to Michael Whitman (Katie, daughters Riley and Liv), Crystal Rogers (Brian), Jon Clark (son Andrew), Brooke Driver, Josh Driver (Ashley), Shelly Wade, Kristy Wade, and Nathan Wade.

Anita was also blessed with many beloved great-grandchildren: Trinity Hamilton, Mason Driver, Kaylee Driver, Jayvien Wade-Chisley, Jaziah Wade-Chisley, Maleah Wade, Gunner Wade, and Nayland Wade. She shared a particularly special bond with two treasured fifth-generation family members, Kylani Wright, daughter of Trinity, and Ah'Lee Glenn, son of Kristy. Her family was her greatest joy, and she took immense pride in being the matriarch of a family spanning five generations.

Throughout her life, Anita was both a dedicated professional and a devoted wife and mother. She began her career as a switchboard operator before attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She later worked for many years as a court stenographer, a profession well suited to her intelligence, precision, and strong work ethic. Together with her husband Bill, she co-founded McPherson Blair Associates, a publishing company they successfully operated until retirement.

Retirement, however, did not slow Anita's desire to serve others. She devoted her time to hospice care, helping provide comfort, dignity, and compassion to those in the final stages of life. Her selflessness and caring nature left a lasting impact on countless families during their most difficult moments.

Faith was central to Anita's life. As a dedicated member of Second Presbyterian Church in Staunton, she served in many capacities throughout the years. She proudly became one of the church's first female Elders, sang in the choir, and helped care for and maintain the church grounds. Her faith was not only something she professed but something she lived daily through service, kindness, and love.

Anita enjoyed a full and vibrant life. She was a proud member of the Red Hats Ladies Bridge Club and often delighted in hosting gatherings with friends and family. She loved introducing games such as Yahtzee and Jenga to generations of family members, creating memories filled with laughter and friendly competition.

Gifted in many ways, Anita excelled in crochet and lovingly handcrafted blankets for each of her grandchildren. She was an exceptional baker, famous among family and friends for her pumpkin roll, fruitcake, and chocolate chip walnut cookies. In the kitchen, her rouladen and leg of lamb became cherished family favorites, recipes she lovingly preserved in the family cookbook for future generations.

Anita found joy in the simple things: hummingbirds fluttering outside her window, completing crossword puzzles, the color blue, and spending time with those she loved. Many would say nothing shone brighter than her beautiful blue eyes and warm smile. Above all else, she treasured her family and the countless moments spent together.

Anita also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, special friends, neighbors, and all those whose lives were touched by her kindness, generosity, wisdom, and unwavering love.

Though her family grieves her passing, they find comfort in knowing that her legacy lives on through the lives she touched, the traditions she passed down, and the generations who will continue to cherish her memory.
