Alton Big A Claytes Monroe, 60, of 1270 Buffalo Gap Highway, passed away Sunday, August 30, 2009 at his residence.
Mr. Monroe was born January 21, 1949 in Rockbridge County, a son of the late Jason Claytes Monroe and Mabel May (Hostetter) Monroe Landes Riley of Swoope.
Alton was retired from B \u0026 S Contractors where he worked as a truck driver for a number of years; he attended the Lighthouse Church and was an avid listener and searcher for local band talents.
In addition to his father, Mr. Monroe was preceded in death by his wife Doris Ann (Moran) Monroe; a brother, Arnold C. Monroe and step-fathers, Carl Landes and Bob Riley.
Surviving in addition to his mother of Swoope, is a daughter, Sharon D. Monroe and her fianc William Litzenberg, Jr. of Crimora; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Wanda C. Monroe of Raphine, Christine D. Hinkle and her husband Curtis and Melissa L. Curry all of Swoope; step-son, Douglas Howdyshell, Jr. of Staunton; a step-brother, Glasgow Riley, Jr. and his wife Hope of OK.; three step-sisters , Loretta Callison and her husband Jimmy of Swoope, Phyllis Bird and her husband Bill of Churchville and Shirley Curry and her husband Gene of Staunton; two granddaughters, Jessica and Samantha Monroe; and his special friend, Wanda Henkle of Verona.
A Celebration of Altons life will be conducted 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 3, 2009 in the Coffman Funeral Home Chapel by Revs. Warren R. Knott and Harold L. Wade.
Burial will follow in Oaklawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be Doug Bennett, Alfie Knott, David Knott, Scott Phillips, Whitney Cook, Curtis Cook, Tommy Breeden and Wayne George.
The family will receive friends this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory and at other times the home of his Mother, Mrs. Mabel Riley of 1272 Buffalo Gap Hwy. Swoope.
