Obituary for Jon Eckstrom Dunning, Jr.

Born April 27 1958, Jon Eckstorm Dunning Jr. became the newest part of a family that was steeped in a rich heritage. He was a direct descendant of Carter Braxton, a signer of The Declaration of Independence, the son of a legendary head coach of the Ohio State Buckeye football team. He was also a Great Grandson of Judge Holt, of the Supreme Court of Appeals. He was the Grandson of a WWII veteran and the son of Jon Eckstorm Dunning Sr., a West Point graduate and Vietnam veteran. As an Army brat he and his Mother, Margaret Holt, Brother, Carter Dunning and Sisters Ginny Dunning and Sisa Doss, moved from base to base living in Countries such as Germany and Panama, where he fell in love with snorkeling on the Coral Reef.
Jon became a young man during the 70’s, a period that would help mold his character and nurture his soul, all while building friendships that he would cherish for a lifetime.
He began his high school campaign at Garfield High where he lettered in football and began friendships with many people, including Jeff Early and Marty Swaney, both of whom he spoke with during his final days.
His affinity for mischief got him on a 1st class ticket to Christ Church Boarding School where he continued to letter in mischief, mayhem and soccer, a sport he truly enjoyed. There he met and made lifelong friends such as Jerry Grontas, Preston Carter and David McNamara, through which he met amazing people such as David Hanna, all of which spoke with him in his final days.
After High School he and a friend hitchhiked out West where he landed in Phoenix and soon after met the love of his life, Marydith, who he proposed to the first night they met.
He then joined the Army as a medic and “fought” in the Cold War. During his 6 years enlisted they had two children, Jon ‘Stormy’ Eckstorm Dunning lll and Moriah Michela Dunning. They were the light of his life.
After the Army and a brief stop as a nurse at the Prison in Staunton he went to work as a LPN at Western State Hospital. To those that had the privilege to meet Jon, it will come as no surprise to learn that all the patients loved him and looked forward to when he would come to work. That is when he made more friendships with some wonderful people such as Lisa and Bruce Thompson, Shirley Curry and Martha Sparks. Martha dressed as Santa Clause at a surprise Christmas party at his house while he was going through a round of Cancer treatment in the early 90’s. He was supported through his illness in so many ways. One of which was through fellow employees who donated their own vacation time to allow him to be at home with his family. Lisa and Martha were able to visit him in his final days.
Obituary is defined as a brief biography, an account of someone’s life. Well, the best way to take account of and to understand the life Jon Dunning lead is to look at his friends and the strength of the bonds he shared with them. Let these friendships he formed and the holes he leaves behind in their hearts be a testament to the man he was.
Everyone is welcome to come share in these memories with his family and friends on September 22nd from 12-8pm. Please contact the family or close friends for their address.
We would like to thank all those people who have helped us over the years. We love you.
