Obituary for Thelma (Bales) Brown

Thelma (Bales) Brown, 88, widow of Clarence Bell Brown, of 500 C Street, passed away Monday, June 11, 2018 in the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.
Mrs. Brown was born on June 20, 1929 in Gary, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Walter and Cary (Kennedy) Bales.
Thelma was an active and faithful member of the Staunton First Church of God, she enjoyed telling West Virginia jokes and she would quote many times, “You can take the girl out of West Virginia, but you can’t take West Virginia out of the girl.”
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by two sisters, Ola Mae Brown and Marie Davis.
Surviving are three sons, James L. “Jim” Brown and his wife Phyllis, Robert “Bobby” Brown and his wife Debbie, and W. Keith Brown and his wife Nancy, all of Staunton; five grandchildren, Jeff Brown and wife Dawne, Melissa Wenger and husband Nathan, Kristie Brown, Brian Brown and wife Melanie, and Jennifer Edson and husband Bryan; twelve great-grandchildren; and a sister, Shelby Jean Clark of Wirtz, Virginia.
Those wishing to pay their respects may visit Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory at any time.
A graveside service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 14, 2018 in Oaklawn Memory Gardens by Pastor Harry Moore.
It is suggested those desiring make memorial contributions to the Staunton First Church of God, 1850 Shutterlee Mill Road, Staunton, Virginia 24401.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive, Staunton, is in charge of her arrangements.
